Battery Chemicals

PPTech provide cost effective, state of the art evaporation, crystallisation and drying plant solutions with particular current focus on the rapidly emerging battery chemicals market. Services span the full project lifecycle; from conceptual development through to design, construct, commissioning and plant operations support.

The rapid uptake of electric vehicles has led to a surge in demand for battery chemicals made from lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and others. These chemicals must be produced to meet exacting purity standards, more typical of pharmaceuticals than the previously acceptable industrial or technical grades. Key processes for battery chemicals include the recovery of pure solids from liquid solutions using advanced thermal processes such as evaporation, crystallization and drying; all specialities of PPTech.

Our technologies of forced crystallisers, baffle crystallisers and cooling crystallisers (and associated dryers) are all part of the technology solution of the various process trains of this energy revolution. Typical primary product applications include the crystallisation of:

  • lithium hydroxide monohydrate
  • lithium carbonate
  • nickel sulphate hexahydrate
  • cobalt sulphate heptahydrate
  • manganese sulphate monohydrate

Related and employed in the refining train include crystallisers or evaporators dealing with

  • sodium sulphate decahydrate (glaubers)
  • sodium sulphate anhydrous (SSA)
  • lithium brines
  • lithium chloride
  • ZLD (often referred as SOP or end of train)
  • Mixed salts
  • Double salts (for pCAM)

Typically, these applications use conventional heating, cooling and/or energy-efficient techniques like vapour recompression and thermo-recompression for optimisation of utility consumption.
